MARANGU ROUTE 6
DAYS/5NIGHTS
DAY 1. Mandara Hut ( 2752 m)(9,021 ft)
After breakfast, meet some of your crew members then drive
to Marangu gate. After registration begin trekking by
passing through a rain forest to the Mandara Hut. This day
the trekking is reasonably easy although the path is
sometimes slippery.
DAY 2. Horombo Hut (3780m )(12,400 ft)
From Mandara the path continues through the forest. A couple
of hours walk will bring you to incredible views of the
summit having emerged from the forest. The path follows the
rolling moorland to reach Horombo Hut.
DAY 3. Acclimitization Day
This is an extra day of acclimatization and it's an ideal
day to rest as well as walk high and sleep low. To
acclimatize you will walk to Zebra Rocks or to Mawenzi Hut
then return to Horombo Hut for another overnight.
DAY 4. Kibo Hut ( 4,700M) (15,420 ft)
Continue on the moorland path, past the 'Last Water Point'
where you should fill your bottles. The slope eases as you
reach the desert like expanse of The Saddle and the group of
huge rocks. It's an easy couple of hours to Kibo Hut. You
must drink as much as possible.
DAY 5. Summit Attempt - Uhuru peak ( 5,895m) (19,340
ft)
You will rise around midnight and after you are all ready
you begin your ascent to the summit. As the sun rises you
should be at the Gilmans point at (5681m) which is on the
crater rim, continue around the rim for about one more hour
to reach Uhuru Peak (5895m) the highest point in Africa.
Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you
will be able to spend, taking photographs, before the 3 hour
descent back to Kibo hut for tea and biscuits or soup .
After a short rest you gather all your gear you left behind
for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours) for
your overnight.
DAY 6. Marangu gate
After breakfast you continue your descent (6 hours), passing
the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. This is where
successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those
climbers who reached Gillman's Point (5685m) are issued with
green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m),
receive gold certificates. Then drive back to moshi.
